Background
Scientists in Vineland’s Plant Responses and the Environment team designed the RootSmart® air-root pruning propagation tray to promote ideal root architecture for better quality, healthier trees. Young plants grown in bounded substrates can develop root defects including circling, girdling, and descending roots. Defects beginning during propagation do not resolve when the tree is potted up or planted in the field, they persist for the life of the tree. Starting with an air-pruning tray from day one avoids such defects, eliminates the need for manual or chemical root pruning and produces more fine and fibrous roots for optimal plant health.
Product Overview
Advantages
- In field trials comparing RootSmart® to closed-walled and semi-open walled air-pruning trays, 40% of the trees showing best root quality after 5 years were started in RootSmart® trays.
- Grow 38% more trees using 7% less space than 18-count trays.
- 101 lbs of paper waste vs. 2,000 lbs of plastic pot waste for every 100,000 plants grown.
