Image-Based Leaf Analysis System
A custom tool for empirical, qualitative data collection in the field without defoliation.
Vineland is seeking a commercial partner to develop, manufacture, market and sell this solution.

Background
There is economic and environmental value to be gained through empirical analysis of visual characteristics of leaves. Present methods for leaf analysis involve collection of fresh leaves from the field and analysis using immobile laboratory equipment. This precludes non-destructive in-situ data collection, limiting utilization of empirical methods. Vineland has developed a solution provides in-situ, non-destructive leaf imaging and analysis. The system uses a standard smart phone with camera and addresses challenges around lighting variability, image scaling, and perspective with a simple, low cost backdrop.

- Analysis of live leaf tissue
- Low cost of equipment
- Allows for repeat measurements of the same leaf over time.
Characteristics
- Integrated handheld device not requiring defoliation.
- Mechanical features: handle, clip, sizing, card frame, ergonomic design.
- Leaf image rectification using standard markers.
- Region of interest localization, scaling, and perspective correction.
- Colour normalization using integrated reference card.
- Empirical analysis of leaf colour as part of integrated system.
- Bluescreen leaf segmentation.
