New technologies are continuously being developed for use in the greenhouse environment including solutions based on robotics, computer vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science, and more.

The typical development strategy has been to create a new technology that fits into the existing greenhouse environment and set of production practices. However, history has shown that technology applied to various industries has been more transformative.

The answer to these questions will lead to a transformative change – the greenhouse of the future!

  • What infrastructure configuration is preferable for technology?
  • How should we grow plants to make it easier and more effective for technological solutions?
  • What are desirable traits for new plant varieties that address technology challenges?

The Goal

The goal of this project is to explore how plant production techniques, plant variety development and selection, and overall greenhouse configuration and infrastructure can be changed to accommodate technology better as well as how technology should be developed and used optimally when paired with changes to the operational environment.

The Objectives

  • Test and validate new greenhouse technologies with the added dimension of variations in production practices and plant varieties

  • Develop a roadmap for short, medium, and long-term technology adoption and adaptation to prepare for a future paradigm shift in greenhouse plant production

  • Explore transformative changes in greenhouse plant production to optimize technology performance now and in the future
