Research Technician, Biological Control

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Research Technician, Biological Control to work in an industry-driven research environment. Vineland is a uniquely Canadian results-oriented organization dedicated to horticulture science and innovation.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director, Biological Crop Protection, the Research Technician will work on laboratory and greenhouse/field activities in biological control and integrated pest management research on arthropods in ornamental and production horticulture.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform day-to-day laboratory and field activities in biological control and integrated pest management research on arthropods in ornamental and production horticulture
  • Dedicated research tasks on specific project(s), e.g.:
    • ASP/U of G thrips and aphid projects
    • Short contract research
  • Organize and run experiments (aid with experimental design and set-up, data collection, entry and analysis, develop new protocols)
  • Maintain insect colonies and plants as required
  • Assist in the preparation of written reports and communication of research findings and other technical developments to stakeholders
  • Assist with the training and oversight of co-op and summer students
  • Share responsibility for the upkeep of the workspaces, equipment, MSDS records, electronic laboratory records and supplies

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (BSc) in related discipline is required
  • Research experience is highly preferred but not required
  • Experience in Entomology and plant science is required
  • Experience in integrated pest management is preferred
  • Pesticide Applicator Licence is preferred
  • Knowledge of horticultural crop production, entomology, biological control and/or IPM
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct basic statistical data analysis
  • Good writing skills required for report writing, editing
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
