Senior Research Technician, Urban Forestry

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Senior Research Technician, Urban Forestry to work in an industry-driven research environment. Vineland is a uniquely Canadian results-oriented organization dedicated to horticulture science and innovation.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for project design, execution and reporting under the direction of the Director, Plant Responses and the Environment Program. The role will involve coordinating, planning and leading field research including the management of other technical staff, leading service contract work, monitoring project timelines and managing project budgets.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and execute experiments with cross-functional teams that support the goals of Vineland’s programs
  • Conduct research activities in accordance with research proposals, protocols, schedules and deliverables
  • Liaise and coordinate with the greenhouse team and farm crew as required for the set up, maintenance and clean-up of crops in the greenhouse, Cravo or field following biosecurity protocols
  • Take direction from program leaders and scientists and be accountable for assigned research targets
  • Contribute to project development, experimental design and proposal writing
  • Manage the day‐to‐day activities associated with different projects, including monitoring and documenting progress, managing, analyzing and interpreting data
  • Create and share scientific information from research projects, lead the development of research reports, data analysis and assist with the communication of results to clients and collaborators

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in horticulture, forestry or ecology
  • Minimum of two to three years of research experience in areas of plant science, urban forestry, arboriculture or environmental horticulture science
  • Strong background in research, data analysis and report writing
  • Expertise in urban forestry and knowledge of arboricultural practices
  • Expertise in soil health: field collection practices, key indicators and applications
  • Strong understanding of current technological applications available for addressing urban forestry challenges
