Global Reach, Local Touch: New Vegetable Varieties

This program encompasses breeding new vegetable varieties that are adapted to Canadian growing conditions and meet consumer preferences. Researchers at Vineland are establishing a pipeline for locally-adapted sweet potatoes that would give Canadian growers a larger share of the more than $40 million market. The sweet potato breeding program is focused on breeding high yielding early varieties by 2019 for both fresh and processing markets. Researchers are also establishing a cost-effective sweet potato slip production to help grow the industry.
