Global Reach, Local Touch: New Vegetable Varieties

This program encompasses breeding new vegetable varieties that are adapted to Canadian growing conditions and meet consumer preferences. Researchers at Vineland are establishing a pipeline for locally-adapted sweet potatoes that would give Canadian growers a larger share of the more than $40 million market. The sweet potato breeding program is focused on breeding high yielding early varieties by 2018 for both fresh and processing markets. Researchers in this program are also focused on breeding peppers and cucumbers adapted to Canadian production.
