Parliamentary Secretary for Science, Terry Beech, today announced the recipients of Round 5 funding under Genome Canada’s Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP). Four projects are receiving a total of $3.3 million in federal funding through Genome Canada, with an additional $7.7 million invested through partners including provinces, private and public sector organizations. Dr. Charles Goulet from Université Laval, is working with Vineland Research and Innovation Centre to use variation in aroma-related genes to develop more flavourful tomatoes. Read more

Vance Badawey, Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre, along with Chris Bittle, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, attended the grand opening of the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre’s new Collaborative Greenhouse Technology Centre on June 3. They announced a FedDev Ontario investment of up to $5.76 million in the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre to develop and commercialize innovative horticultural and greenhouse technologies. Graham Rennie of Rennie Estate Winery has purchased one of the first commercialized Appassimento chambers in North America. This method of drying grapes for the wine industry has been developed and delivered to market through a partnership between Ontario manufacturer MTX Postharvest and Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland).
