There’s a big party planned for Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, and Canada Blooms is going to help with the celebration. When the 21st annual Canada Blooms flower and garden show — the largest of its kind in the country — opens in March, there will be a distinctly Canadian flavour to the show, from the design of the displays to the plants being used. Central to this O Canada theme is the 2017 Plant of the Year, the Canadian Shield™ rose as part of Vineland's 49th Parallel Collection. Read more

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, and the Member of Parliament from Niagara Centre, Vance Badawey, announced today that the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre is receiving a $920,000 federal investment to develop new disease-resistant apple and greenhouse tomato varieties that will contribute to the long-term growth and profitability of these two sectors. Parliamentary Secretary for Science, Terry Beech, today announced the recipients of Round 5 funding under Genome Canada’s Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP). Four projects are receiving a total of $3.3 million in federal funding through Genome Canada, with an additional $7.7 million invested through partners including provinces, private and public sector organizations. Dr. Charles Goulet from Université Laval, is working with Vineland Research and Innovation Centre to use variation in aroma-related genes to develop more flavourful tomatoes. Read more

Vance Badawey, Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre, along with Chris Bittle, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, attended the grand opening of the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre’s new Collaborative Greenhouse Technology Centre on June 3. They announced a FedDev Ontario investment of up to $5.76 million in the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre to develop and commercialize innovative horticultural and greenhouse technologies. In collaboration with Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland), the Highway of Heroes Living Tribute project is starting its first season of tree plantings.
